Metal Braces

In the past, braces were individual bands that wrapped around the entire surface of each tooth. Today these bands are reserved for molars. Instead of bands on every tooth, small metal brackets are glued to the front of the teeth. This makes orthodontic treatment more comfortable than it was years ago. Most metal braces require an elastic o-shaped rubber band called a ligature to hold the arch wire onto the bracket. These ligatures come in a variety of colors and may be changed at each orthodontic appointment.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic brackets are an esthetic alternative to traditional metal braces. They are bonded to the teeth in the same manner as metal brackets, however these brackets are made out of tooth colored materials. This makes ceramic braces less conspicuous and therefore a popular alternative for many of our patients, especially the adults.

Invisalign

Invisalign® is a series of invisible, removable aligners. The aligners move teeth into straighter positions step by step, until you have a more beautiful smile. Unlike conventional braces, these clear aligners can be removed when you eat and brush your teeth. Each set of trays are worn for about 2 weeks and are removed only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each tray with the next in the series, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week – until they have straightened to the final position.

During Invisalign treatment you will visit Dr. Courtney about once every 6 weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages 9-15 months and the average number of trays worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but this will vary from case to case.
